As we continue to sit at home while waiting for
the strike to be called off and with the imminent national elections, issues
such as security of lives and goods should be paramount on our minds. That brings
me to the topic of this week: Burglaries in Ogoja.
There has been a spate of armed robbery attacks
within Ogoja in recent times which has not only affected indigenous/ residents
but also students as well. I, as a student, in an estate where I reside, had my
house burgled a few weeks ago. These men of the underworld came armed, and
shots were fired. Luckily, most of the students within the estate, including
myself, were not within the confines of the estate, most were at home in their
parents houses, and with the almighty God being in charge, nobody was hurt
especially families living within the estate. Imagine if young female students
were still within some of these hostels/ rooms, the story might have been very
different.
This robbery attack is not an isolated event as
other houses have been reported burgled. Of course one might want to attribute the
rise in episodes of break-in to the ongoing strike and or the upcoming national
elections. Whatever be the reason, I humbly implore us all to ascertain the
present state of our belongings in our respective hostels/ accommodation. Additionally,
alertness and watchfulness should be the order of the day for all students
currently resident in Ogoja towards averting any possible episode of break-ins.
And in case you notice any suspicious activity within your area, please report
it to the nearest police station. For CRUTECH, the nearest police station is
located in Igoli, directly opposite the court house.
We beg our striking lecturing team/ staff, who
are fighting for a just cause, to harken to our humble voices and quickly call to
an end the ongoing strike.
Have a lovely week…xoxo
